A great option for families who want to get out and play together!
One of the premier trout streams in America, this is why most people have heard of the town of Basalt. Excellent fishing exists from the dam at Reudi Reservoir to the confluence with the Roaring Fork River. The legendary huge rainbows can be seen in the waters below the dam, where they feed on the tiny shrimp that come out of the bottom of the reservoir. Though difficult to catch, persistence will pay off and if you land one of these, it’s something you’ll never forget.
Just to the east of town sits this popular outing that takes you high above the valley floor. After the steep initial climb, you’ll be rewarded with stupendous views of the Elk Mountains and Frying Pan River Valley. Head back down for a short outing, or continue back for as much as you can handle.
Flowing the entire length of the valley, this river offers anglers an incredible variety of fishing opportunities. Small water up high gives way to a larger river at the confluence with the Frying Pan that’s popular with both wading and floating anglers. If you’d like to see the river by boat, check in with one of the local guide services.
In recent years several cliffs have been developed in the Frying Pan valley that offer a diverse array of rock types and styles. There are both traditional and sport-climbing areas on sandstone, limestone, and granite. A new guidebook is expected to be out summer of 2008, or you can get some information online about rock climbing in the Frying Pan Valley.
The road from Basalt to Reudi Reservoir is a great and popular outing for road bike enthusiasts. The winding nature and incredible scenery are sure to give you a ride you won't soon forget. Above the dam, the quality of the pavement deteriorates some, but it’s possible to continue up high into the upper Frying Pan Valley, where you are sure to be alone with your thoughts as the wind zips past you.
The reservoir offers a variety of recreational opportunities, from sailing to power boats to fishing. This is a popular place to escape the summer heat, as the water is often very cool throughout the year. A great option for families who want to get out and play together!
